Choosing plants that fit with the ecology of the area, utilize less water and interact with local species will help the environment you are trying to sustain. In Southern California, using drought tolerant plants for a large percentage of the landscape is an important way to reduce water demand and using native plants ensures that the planting will not damage the local environment.
All plants that were used in the Beyond Green Garden were either natives, drought tolerants or edibles. We aimed to design the plants to act in a guild, as well.  In a plant guild, plants are chosen not merely for their beauty, but for the role the plants play in that plant community and the local habitat.  For example, in a plant guild surrounding a fruiting tree, partner plants are chosen that may ward off fruit pests, to provide additional nitrogen to the soil, to bring in additional pollinators to encourage more flowering and fruiting.
